Magnus Carlsen won the 2023 SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz Championship FIDE

Norway's five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen has won the International Chess Federation (FIDE) 2023 SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz Championship in Zagreb to claim the first prize of $40,000 (£30,800/€36,200) with a score of 26.0/36.

Russia's Ian Nepomniachtchi, playing under a neutral flag, finished second and Alireza Firouzja of France placed third overall.

Carlsen started the decisive day with an impressive winning streak.

He won against India's 17-year-old prodigy and Grandmaster Dommaraju Gukesh who was playing in the competition on a wildcard.

Carlsen then continued in a winning vein completing another victory against Croatian Ivan Saric.

His third straight win came against another Indian, Vishwanathan Anand, before clinching the overall title by beating his closest rival Nepomniachi.

Carlsen could afford to lose to Firouzja and Richard Rapport now representing Romania.

He defeated another Romanian Constantin Lupulescu to end the tournament on a high note.

Fabiano Caruana of the United States still leads the overall standings but next event in the Grand Chess Tour is not scheduled until November when the players head to Saint Louis, Missouri, for the Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz.

The event is set to run from November 12 to November 19.
