Doreen Vennekamp of Germany has won her first global title in the women's 25 metres air pistol category at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championships here in Baku.

World number one Vennekamp was dominant throughout and equalled the world record with 40 hits.

Her gold medal was even secure before the final series of shots.

Ukraine's Olena Kostevych, an Olympic champion on the 10m range 19 years ago at Athens 2004, claimed silver with 31.

Bronze went to Latvia's Agata Rasmane in her first individual senior competition with 25 hits, a performance which also earned her a quota place.

Kostevych had led early on but gradually Vennekamp pulled away.

"At the beginning we were close to another and then she had a lead which was not shocking as she is a fine shooter, I knew that I had to shoot five out of five to get breathing space, she was really strong, but I could jump a little higher to win," Vennekamp said.

She revealed that Kostevych had offered her encouragement after the European Games in Kraków-Małopolska when Vennekamp took bronze.

"Olena came to me at the European Games and said you 'got bronze today but that is not what you are reaching for, at the moment you are unbeatable, show it to the world' and that is what I did today.

"It was the biggest compliment I could ever get.

"It is amazing to hear such an important shooter that she had noticed your talent and sees yourself better than her, it is a good sport for showing friendship to one another."

Vennekamp's final was also watched by German Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ralf Horlemann.

There were also quota places for Haniyeh Rostamiyan of Iran, Tanyaporn Prucksakorn of Thailand, who finished fifth, South Korea's Yang Jiin, and Tien Chia Chen of Chinese Taipei.

India won team gold with Rhythm Sangwan, Esha Singh and Manu Bhaker who scored 1744 to take victory by one shot.

Tien and her Chinese Taipei team-mates Tzu Yi Ti and Chia Ying Wu took silver for Chinese Taipei with a score of 1743.

Feng Sixuan Zhao Nan and Lui Rui claimed bronze for China with the same score of 1743 on countback.

In the men's three position rifle Alexander Schmirl of Austria took gold and earned an Olympic quota place with 462.6 points.

Petr Nymbuesky of Czech Republic took silver with 459.2.

Akhil Sheoran of India, in his first World Championships, took bronze with 450.0 and earned a quota place.

Switzerland's Christoph Duerr in fifth and Finland's Aleksi Leppa in sixth also claimed a quota place.

"I had a perfect qualification, it was a very good day, I was very focused, so it was easy going into the final," Schmirl said.

"I have been unlucky this season, I missed it three times by 0.1 or 0.2 and I am happy to have the quota place but for me the greatest success in shooting sports is to be world champion because there are so many competitors."

In the team event it was another gold for India's line-up of Sheoran, Aishwary Tomar, Pratap Singh and Niraj Kumar with 1750.

Silver went to Austria's Alexander Schmirl, Andreas Thum and Patrick Diem who scored 1749, while bronze was taken by Henrik Larsen, Ole Halvorsen and Jon-Hermann Hegg of Norway with 1748.
