Spain lead the medals table at the Mediterranean Beach Games in the Greek city of Heraklion on the island of Crete, clinching the women's beach handball title for their latest success.

The Spanish finished the women's beach handball competition with a perfect record of eight wins, six of which came in the preliminary round-robin to seal a semi-final against fourth-placed Italy.

They won the semi-final 21-18, and faced hosts Greece in the final after they placed second in the round-robin and beat Portugal 21-16, 25-24 in the last four.

Spain had the edge in the final at the Karteros Beach Centre, taking it 22-20, 23-20, helped by an 18-point haul from Sara Hernández Torrico.

Portugal overcame Italy 24-16, 20-12 for bronze.

In the men's tournament, Croatia topped Pool A with wins against Italy, Cyprus and Kosovo, then dominated the fourth-placed Pool B side Morocco 33-24, 30-22 in the quarter-finals.

In the semi-finals Croatia triumphed 26-14, 30-20 over Cyprus, who had stunned Greece in the quarter-finals.

Croatia took gold with a 22-18, 23-20 victory over Italy in the final, and Spain earned bronze by beating Cyprus 25-12, 28-16.

Spain had dominated the rowing beach sprint events, winning all five golds.

Races were cancelled from the semi-finals onwards due to strong winds, with results based on the quarter-finals in the men's singles sculls, won by Miguel Salas, and time trials in other events.

Ander Martín and Adrian Miramon took men's double sculls gold, Celia de Miguel won the women's single sculls, Ainhoa Casanova and Nadia Felipe triumphed in the women's doubles sculls and Spain also took mixed relay gold.

European champion Paola García won women's karate beach kata gold for Spain by 25.90 points to 24.80 against Italy's Orsola D'Onofrio, and Raúl Martín earned the men's title with 25.20 points to the 24.40 of Morocco's Salah Eddine El Mansoury.

Lydia Pérez Touriño added to Spain's gold medal haul with victory in the women's under-70 kilograms beach wrestling final against France's Manon Kury.

They also won the men's beach soccer tournament, beating Portugal 3-0 in the final.

Greece and France both have five gold medals with three days remaining at the Mediterranean Beach Games.

Both 3x3 basketball titles were included among the Greek successes, while France won both kiteboarding golds through Maxime Nocher in the men's and Poema Newland in the women's.

Italy have two golds, and Croatia and Syria one.

The Mediterranean Beach Games is due to conclude on Saturday (September 16).
