Nigerian Minister of Sports Development John Owan Enoh has issued a call to the country's National Olympic Committee (NOC) to produce a best-ever performance at the Olympic Games.

Nigeria's most successful Olympics came at Atlanta 1996 when two gold, one silver, and three bronze medals were won.

Enoh made the call during a meeting with the NOC's Executive Board at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

"I want to challenge you to do more, and go farther than you have gone," Enoh said, as reported by Complete Sports.

"Beyond the grants and training programmes, let our performances in the various sporting events be glamorous.

"I want to charge the NOC to spare no effort in terms of Team Nigeria's preparations, to assure the country of a better performance.

"I am glad that the NOC Executive Board is made up of executives of the various sporting federations.

"While the Olympic Qualifiers are still running, I look forward to the completion of the phase, so we can have a briefing with the different sports and the number of athletes we are taking to Paris.

"Gone are the days where we are told the fun is in the participation.

"Sports has become a major weapon in the international diplomacy of countries.

"There is a sense of pride that comes with making podium appearances at international competitions."

Enoh shared Nigerian President Bola Tinubu's desire to reshape the country's sporting landscape from a recreational activity into a thriving industry.

The Government is aiming to make sport a contributor to the nation's economy, have it create employment opportunities, help to alleviate poverty, and foster peace throughout the nation.

NOC President Habu Ahmed Gumel responded by expressing his appreciation for Enoh's "proactive and progressive" steps taken within his first few months in office, after his August start date.

Gumel assured Enoh that the NOC was firmly committed to furthering sport in the country and supporting athletes to perform at their best at Paris 2024.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are set to run from July 26 to August 11 and is due to be Nigeria's 18th appearance.
